The problem
Intervention: Daily 10-gram supplement of Advanced Protein Powder produced from fish bycatch, delivered over 90 days through the SCOPE (Sustainable Community Partnership and Empowerment) model
Who it was tested with: 46 malnourished children aged 3–6 years from slums in Bengaluru, India.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using the Sustainable Community Partnership and Empowerment (SCOPE) model, we implemented a 90-day intervention with daily 10 g of Advanced Protein Powder (APP), produced from underutilized fish bycatch. Forty-six malnourished children (aged 3-6) from Bengaluru slums were randomized into a Control group receiving caloric support or an APP supplement group. Growth indicators, cognition, and caregiver perspectives were assessed." The randomized design with a comparison group and measurement of outcomes over time provides experimental evidence that the intervention improved growth and cognitive outcomes.
Small sample size (46 children), short intervention period (90 days), study limited to one urban location in India. Control group received caloric support rather than placebo, making it unclear whether benefits are specific to fish protein or general to supplementation. Long-term sustainability and scalability not assessed.
