The problem
Intervention: Improving maternal preconception nutritional status (height, weight, BMI)
Who it was tested with: 1,409 women and their offspring in Vietnam, participants in a randomized-controlled trial of preconception micronutrient supplementation.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We used prospective cohort data from a randomized-controlled trial of preconception micronutrient supplementation in Vietnam, PRECONCEPT (n = 1409). Poisson regression models were used to examine associations between PMNS and risk of offspring stunting... All models were adjusted for child age, sex, gestational weight gain, education, socioeconomic status and treatment group." The study tracked women before and after pregnancy through a structured trial, controlling for multiple confounding factors, allowing examination of the relationship between preconception nutrition and child stunting outcomes.
The study relies on observational associations and cannot definitively prove that improving preconception nutrition causes reduced stunting. The generalizability to other populations and settings is uncertain.
