The problem
Intervention: Child Councillor Programmes as part of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, using Lundy's model of participation
Who it was tested with: Ten young people who served as child councillors in Malaysia.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using Lundy's model of child participation, which focuses on spaces, voice, audience, and influence, this study assesses young people's participation as child councillors in two programmes in one city in Malaysia" and "this study employed thematic analysis in analysing the data obtained using focus groups." This is a tracer study examining past participants' experiences using qualitative methods without a comparison group, placing it at the practitioner level, and the findings show that the programmes did not achieve meaningful participation as intended.
Small sample size (n=10) from one city; no comparison group; relies on retrospective accounts from focus groups; no measurement of actual influence on decisions or outcomes.
