The problem
Intervention: Early surgical intervention and provision of prenatal diagnosis to parents
Who it was tested with: 158 infants with cleft lip with or without palate and their parents in French multicenter settings.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Clinical evaluations were performed at 4 and 12 months postpartum. The impact on the parents and on the parent-infant relationship was evaluated by the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), the Edinburgh Post-partum Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Impact-on-Family Scale (IOFS)." This prospective cohort measured outcomes before and after early intervention, making it a pre-post design, though without an unexposed comparison group.
The study is observational without a randomized control group; causality between early intervention and reduced stress cannot be definitively established. Long-term outcomes beyond 12 months are not reported.
