The problem
Intervention: Child protection system investigation following a maltreatment referral, where referrals above a threshold are automatically "defaulted" into investigation
Who it was tested with: Children in the U.S. referred to the child protection system.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using a regression discontinuity design, we study the impacts of this interaction on child health." A regression discontinuity compares groups either side of a threshold, which is a quasi-experimental design with a comparison group.
Abstract gives no numbers, sample size or data details. Regression discontinuity estimates apply to children near the threshold and to a short follow-up of two months. Mechanism findings are described as an exploration.
