The problem
Intervention: Program evaluation (baseline data collection)
Who it was tested with: Girls aged 13-14 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (377 quantitative, 61 qualitative).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"This mixed-methods study uses baseline data from a program evaluation in the Democratic Republic of Congo to examine two outcomes of interest: self-reported exposure to forced sex and belief that a girl's community would force her to marry her hypothetical rapist, for married and unmarried 13- to 14-year-old girls." The study documents the problem and associated norms but provides no evidence on the effectiveness of any intervention.
This is baseline data only with no intervention evaluation, no comparison group beyond married vs. unmarried status, and no follow-up data. The cross-sectional design cannot establish temporal relationships between forced sex and early marriage.
