The problem
Intervention: School-based vaccination screening to identify under-vaccinated Grade 1 learners, with referral for catch-up vaccination at health facilities or through school-based outreach vaccination sessions.
Who it was tested with: 1,839 Grade 1 learners (98% participation rate) in 10 public and community primary schools in Ndola and Lusaka districts, Zambia..
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Grade 1 learners were screened for routine vaccination status using under-5 cards or caregiver recall. Learners missing doses...were referred for catch-up vaccination at health facilities or through school-based outreach." The study measured vaccination coverage before and after the screening and catch-up intervention in the same population, showing substantial improvements in measles vaccination coverage through a feasible school-based platform.
Small pilot scale in only two urban districts limits generalisability; no control or comparison group; reliance on caregiver recall for vaccination history in some cases; no long-term follow-up of sustained coverage.
