The problem
Intervention: Physical activity interventions of varying types, session durations, frequencies, and intervention periods
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents aged 8-19 years.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, EBSCO, and the Cochrane Library was conducted up to January 10, 2026, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining physical activity interventions and academic performance in the target population." The systematic review of RCTs with meta-analysis constitutes an experimental evidence tier design.
The meta-analysis includes a broad age range (8-19 years) which may obscure age-specific effects. Evidence base was limited, particularly for spelling performance and several subgroup analyses. Exploratory subgroup analyses findings were based on small numbers of studies and should be interpreted cautiously.
