The problem
Intervention: Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) given to women and/or children to provide extra micronutrients, essential fatty acids and protein
Who it was tested with: Pregnant/lactating women and children aged 6 months and older in six Sub-Saharan African countries.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Papers reporting randomized trials conducted in SSA in which apparently healthy women and/or ≥6‐mo‐old children received SQ‐LNSs were identified through electronic and manual searches." This indicates the review synthesizes randomized controlled trials with comparison groups, supporting an EXPERIMENTAL tier, while mixed results across countries and outcomes justify the MIXED outcome direction.
As a narrative review rather than a systematic meta-analysis, findings are not pooled statistically and effectiveness varied notably by country and setting.
