The problem
Intervention: Age-appropriate pertussis vaccination (part of routine immunisation schedule)
Who it was tested with: Children in five counties of southeastern Romania notified with pertussis between February 2024 and January 2025; 63.2% were under five years old.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A retrospective, population-based analysis was conducted on 452 cases notified between February 2024 and January 2025... Age-appropriate vaccination was independently protective against pneumonia (adjusted OR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.96, p = 0.035)" – The study used multivariate logistic regression with adjustment for confounders to assess the protective effect of vaccination against a clinical outcome (pneumonia) among cases in the population, establishing both association and a causal direction.
Retrospective observational design without randomisation; cannot prove causation, only association. Vaccination status based on reported schedule adherence; actual clinical efficacy may differ. No comparison with vaccinated cohorts from other time periods.
