The problem
Intervention: Empowering local authorities with resources and communication strategies to address institutional mistrust
Who it was tested with: Children (age not specified) in 22 African countries across 216 subnational regions.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We matched information on child vaccination status from the Demographic Health Surveys with information on institutional trust from the Afrobarometer surveys at the subnational level... Associations between institutional mistrust and child vaccination uptake were assessed with multivariable fixed effects logistic regressions." The study uses observational data from two sources matched at subnational level with regression analysis, which represents an analysis of existing data rather than a true experimental or even before-after design with a defined intervention tested on participants.
Observational design without randomisation or comparison group prevents causal inference. Cross-sectional matching at subnational level means temporal relationships cannot be established. Unmeasured confounding factors may explain associations.
