The problem
Intervention: SMS-based reminder messages to caregivers, with variation in educational content and incentive structures
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents less than 18 years old across multiple countries, primarily in high-income settings.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Reports of randomised trials written in English and involving children and adolescents less than 18 years old were included. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines." The systematic review of randomised controlled trials provides the highest level of evidence for effectiveness, meeting the threshold for EXPERIMENTAL design.
The review covers only randomised trials published in English up to July 2022, primarily from high-income countries, limiting generalisability to low- and middle-income settings. The heterogeneity across studies means that specific effectiveness cannot be quantified uniformly, and the review does not identify which features consistently drive effectiveness across all contexts.
