The problem
Intervention: Standard hepatitis B vaccination schedule for preterm infants with tracking of timely first-dose administration and full-course completion
Who it was tested with: 779 preterm infants across five counties, cities and districts in Fujian Province, China; 363 of these had serological testing for immune response.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study combined with short-term prospective serological follow-up across five counties, cities and districts of Fujian Province between 2022 and 2023... For 363 enrolled infants, we performed serological tests to detect hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) at 1-2 months after they completed the full HepB vaccination series." The study measured pre-vaccination status (vaccination records) and post-vaccination immune response without a comparison group, establishing a PRE_POST design that shows the vaccine is effective in inducing immunity in most preterm infants.
Study design lacks a comparison or control group and cannot establish causal relationships. Data collected from only one Chinese province limits generalizability. Serological follow-up only at 1-2 months post-vaccination does not assess long-term immunity duration.
