The problem
Intervention: Improved maternal nutrition status during pregnancy through supplementary food provision and health promotion
Who it was tested with: Mothers with children aged 12-59 months in Indonesia (80 participants: 40 with stunted children, 40 with non-stunted children).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The case-control study using the retrospective design involved mothers with children aged 12-59 months... The sample was 80 toddlers, divided into 40 stunted, and 40 non-stunted toddlers... Results showed that maternal nutritional status during pregnancy was significantly associated with stunting among children (p-value: 0.000)." This is a comparative study design using a comparison group (stunted versus non-stunted), making it experimental tier evidence of the relationship between maternal nutrition and child stunting outcomes.
Retrospective design relies on historical data from Mother and Child Health handbooks which may have incomplete or inaccurate records. Study does not control for other confounding factors such as postnatal nutrition, infection, or socioeconomic variables. Small sample size (n=80) limits generalisability.
