The problem
Intervention: Asset-based intervention provided to orphaned and vulnerable children
Who it was tested with: Orphaned children and adolescents in Uganda.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Participants were randomly assigned to either the control arm or two treatment arms receiving an asset-based intervention. Participants in the treatment arms scored better grades; and had higher odds of transitioning to post-primary education relative to the control arm." The randomised assignment with comparison groups and reported educational outcomes constitute an experimental design demonstrating intervention effectiveness.
The abstract provides limited detail on intervention components, sample size, effect sizes, and whether outcomes were measured at multiple time points.
