The problem
Intervention: Observational analysis of the relationship between past political violence exposure and subsequent interpersonal violence victimization
Who it was tested with: Adolescents and young adults in nine African countries (Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We estimate this association with multi-country micro data from nine African countries, merging nationally representative Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS) data with Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED)." The study uses rigorous national-level data linkage across multiple countries to assess whether political violence exposure predicts subsequent interpersonal violence risk in adolescence and adulthood.
Cross-sectional design limits causal inference; unmeasured confounders may explain associations; temporal ordering of some exposures and outcomes unclear; country-level variation in conflict characteristics not fully explored
