The problem
Intervention: Systematic mental health screening protocol using validated instruments for families and patients with newly diagnosed pediatric brain tumors, with referral to supportive counseling when indicated
Who it was tested with: Children (mean age 8.6 years) with newly diagnosed brain tumors admitted to PICU and their parents.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We implemented a mental health screening protocol for families and patients with a newly diagnosed brain tumor admitted to our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at the time of diagnosis. Screening instruments were selected based on their previous validation and relevance to both a brain tumor diagnosis and PICU admission." This is a program implementation study that identified mental health needs but did not measure whether the intervention itself improved mental health outcomes.
Very small sample (n=8 dyads completed out of 18 eligible), no comparison group, no measurement of whether screening and counseling referrals improved outcomes, and high refusal rate for support services limits understanding of intervention effectiveness
