The problem
Intervention: Increasing women's political representation in state legislatures
Who it was tested with: Children under five in districts across India's 17 largest states.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We use a large cross-sectional district representative household survey collected between 2002-4 through the second round of the District Level Household Survey. It is merged with detailed state legislative assembly election data we collected." The study links political representation data to household nutrition outcomes but lacks a comparison group or randomization to establish causality.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; temporal relationship between representation changes and nutrition outcomes not clearly established; multiple confounding factors not controlled; mechanism of effect not directly measured.
