The problem
Intervention: Infant carrying intervention combined with maternal support for responsive mirroring interactions during the first seven months postpartum
Who it was tested with: 75 young mothers (mean age 19.45 years, 57.4% non-white) and their infants in a longitudinal randomized controlled trial.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Dyads were randomly assigned to either an infant carrying intervention or a book-reading control condition during the first seven months postpartum. Maternal mirroring was assessed at seven months on the Still-Face Procedure using second-by-second coding of affective, vocal, and behavioral contingent interactions. Longitudinal outcomes at 3.5 years old included child internalizing and externalizing problems, emotional reactivity, empathy, and narrative coherence." The study used randomization with a comparison group and prospective measurement of outcomes from infancy to early childhood, meeting experimental design criteria.
Study does not report effect sizes or confidence intervals; country/cultural context not specified; sample limited to young mothers; no information on intervention adherence or fidelity; outcomes measured at single timepoint (3.5 years) rather than multiple follow-ups
