The problem
Intervention: Brain Powered Games (BPG): a mobile computerized cognitive rehabilitation intervention delivered over 12 weeks
Who it was tested with: School-age children aged 5-12 years in Uganda and Malawi, including those with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV), HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU), and HIV-unexposed uninfected (HUU).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Participants were randomized to a 12-week BPG intervention or a waitlist. Neuropsychological outcomes were assessed at baseline, postintervention, and 6-month follow-up using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children Second Edition (KABC-II), test of variables of attention, and Cogstate." The randomized design with comparison group and validated outcome measures constitutes an experimental design, though mixed country-level results suggest context-dependent effectiveness.
Results differed substantially between countries without clear explanation for differential effectiveness. Study does not report retention rates, adherence to intervention, or implementation fidelity across sites. Long-term sustainability beyond 6 months unknown.
