The problem
Intervention: Community-based preconception care package delivered by trained auxiliary nurse midwives through village clinics, focusing on nutrition, reproductive health, vaccination coverage and mental health
Who it was tested with: Women aged 19-45 years who had not completed their families, living in rural villages of Wardha Community Development block, Maharashtra, India (estimated 3,200 women across 96 villages).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This study follows an open cohort stepped-wedge cluster randomised design with repeated cross-sectional sampling over 3 years, allowing phased implementation of the PCC package and systematic evaluation." The stepped-wedge design with comparison to routine services allows causal inference about the intervention's impact, qualifying it as experimental, but no results are yet available to evaluate outcome direction.
This is a protocol describing a planned study, not completed research. No outcome data is available. The actual effectiveness and implementation success remain to be determined.
