The problem
Intervention: SMS-based reminder messages to parents, with variations including embedded health education or combined with monetary incentives
Who it was tested with: Children and adolescents under 18 years old; parents or guardians receiving messages.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Reports of randomised trials written in English and involving children less than 18 years old were included. The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines." The systematic review of randomised trials with comparison groups (reminders versus no reminders) constitutes experimental-level evidence for vaccine intervention effectiveness.
High heterogeneity between studies limits definitive conclusions; majority of trials from high-income countries may not reflect effectiveness in other contexts; specific message features and optimal timing not identified.
