The problem
Intervention: Combined physical-cognitive intervention integrating motor games and soroban abacus training into physical education classes over 12 weeks
Who it was tested with: 82 primary school children in the first cycle of primary education (41 experimental, 41 control).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 82 primary school children allocated to an experimental group (n = 41) or a control group (n = 41). The experimental group completed a 12-week physical-cognitive intervention integrated into physical education classes, whereas the control group followed the standard curriculum. Self-regulation, emotional regulation, and school adjustment were assessed before and after the intervention using validated questionnaires." This represents a rigorous experimental design with random allocation, a defined intervention period, and validated outcome measures with comparison to a control group.
Relatively small sample size; exploratory nature of some secondary analyses; country/region not specified limiting generalizability
