The problem
Intervention: Strengthening adolescents' personal belief in a just world to mediate the relationship between maltreatment and psychological distress
Who it was tested with: 484 Chinese adolescents (51.03% girls, mean age 12.77 years, range 11-16).
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"A total of 484 Chinese adolescents (51.03% girls; Mage ± SD = 12.77 ± 0.72, Rangeage = 11-16) were followed over a six-month interval. Polynomial regression and response surface analyses revealed" patterns in the data. The study measured maltreatment and outcomes at multiple time points, allowing examination of associations over time, but lacked experimental manipulation or randomization to establish causation.
Study lacks a control or intervention group; it is observational in nature. Cross-cultural generalizability is limited as the sample was exclusively Chinese. The mechanism by which just-world beliefs protect against maltreatment effects is correlational rather than causal, and the six-month timeframe is relatively short for understanding long-term developmental impacts.
