The problem
Intervention: Family economic empowerment intervention comprising incentivized youth financial savings accounts augmented with financial literacy training and peer mentorship, combined with bolstered standard of care
Who it was tested with: 702 adolescents aged 10-16 years living with HIV in Southern Uganda.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The study findings pointed to superior short-term viral suppression and positive adolescent health and mental health functioning among participants receiving the intervention." This demonstrates that the original Suubi+Adherence study found the intervention worked for improving outcomes, and the protocol describes how this will be examined longitudinally as participants mature.
This is a protocol paper describing a planned study. The follow-up phase results are not yet available. The document does not provide specific outcome measurements or effect sizes from the original study. The generalizability to other settings and populations in SSA is not yet established.
