The problem
Intervention: Repeated daily doses of ivermectin 400 or 600 μg/kg for 3 days in children with acute uncomplicated dengue
Who it was tested with: 24 children aged 1-15 years weighing ≥15 kg, presenting within 72 hours of fever onset with laboratory-confirmed dengue.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"In this prospective, open-label, sequential dose-escalation study, children aged 1–15 years who presented within 72 h of fever onset and met the protocol laboratory-confirmation criteria for dengue received ivermectin 400 or 600 μg/kg once daily for 3 days." The study collected before-and-after pharmacokinetic data from a single group without a control group and was explicitly not designed to determine clinical efficacy.
Study was not powered to evaluate antiviral efficacy or clinical benefit; small sample size; open-label design without comparison group; analysis limited to first 48 hours post-dose; unclear whether neutropenia events were related to ivermectin or dengue itself
