The problem
Intervention: Good School Toolkit: a complex behavioral intervention including school-led activities to reduce school violence
Who it was tested with: 21 primary schools in Uganda with 1,921 students and 286 staff at endline.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Implementation measures were captured prospectively in the twenty-one intervention schools over four school terms from 2012 to 2014 and Toolkit exposure captured in the student (n = 1921) and staff (n = 286) endline cross-sectional surveys in 2014." The study prospectively measured implementation over multiple school terms and used cross-sectional surveys at endline to assess exposure and outcomes, demonstrating a pre-post design within the broader RCT framework.
Process evaluation of an intervention schools already participating in a successful RCT; cannot establish independent causation. The study does not explain why some schools achieved 7% violence prevalence while others reached 65%. Unclear what factors beyond toolkit exposure influence variation in violence outcomes.
