The problem
Intervention: Samata, a multi-level, structural and norms-based intervention to keep girls in secondary school and delay marriage
Who it was tested with: Scheduled-caste/scheduled-tribe girls aged 12-13 in the final year of primary school in 80 village clusters in Vijayapura and Bagalkote districts, Karnataka, India.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"80 of 121 village clusters ... were randomly selected (40 intervention; 40 control)" shows a cluster-randomised design with a comparison group, so it is experimental; the primary outcomes showed no difference between arms.
Attrition (72.8% followed up at end-line). Outcome rates were lower than expected owing to secular trends and government programmes, which limits interpretation. A district-level difference was seen in a stratified analysis only.
