Intervention: Assessment of maternal responsiveness and cognitive stimulation in home-based childcare
Who it was tested with: 856 mother-child pairs from the South African Birth to Twenty Plus cohort study, including children from different socio-economic backgrounds.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Childcare quality was assessed using measures of maternal responsiveness and cognitive stimulation. Cognitive development at age 5 was assessed using the Revised Denver Pre-screening Developmental Questionnaire (R-DPDQ). Bivariate analysis and multiple linear regressions were conducted." The study measured associations longitudinally but without intervention or control groups, making it an observational cohort design that cannot definitively establish causal effects.
The study is observational without a comparison or control group, so causality cannot be established. The null finding for overall association may reflect measurement limitations or confounding factors not accounted for.
