The problem
Intervention: Use of Sisom, a digital communication tool designed to give children a voice and promote their participation before pediatric appointments
Who it was tested with: 14 children (8 girls, 6 boys) aged 6-12 years (mean 8.3 years) with cancer diagnosis.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A quasiexperimental design with mixed methods was used. We analyzed 27 filmed appointments with pediatricians for 14 children... The intervention group consisted of children who used Sisom prior to their appointments with pediatricians at a pediatric oncology clinic, and the control group consisted of children who had appointments with pediatricians at 4 pediatric oncology clinics." The study compared actual clinic interactions between children who had used the digital tool versus those who did not, measuring observable participation indicators.
Small sample size of 14 children; no randomized control group; does not measure actual health outcomes or children's perceived satisfaction with participation; limited to oncology setting
