The problem
Intervention: Red ginger extract gummy candy given as a functional food for one month, compared with a placebo
Who it was tested with: Children under five years old in Indonesia.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This quasi-experimental study used intervention and control groups." The design includes a comparison group, and the between-group comparison showed no significant difference, so no benefit over placebo was shown.
Small sample suggested by the authors' call for larger samples, only one month of follow-up, non-normal data, and no reported sample size or randomisation. Short-term growth in a one-month period may not reflect stunting prevention.
