The problem
Intervention: Paediatric Autism Communication Therapy (PACT): a caregiver-focused intervention delivered as 14 sessions over 6 months by trained public health professionals, teaching caregivers to understand and respond supportively to their child's communication
Who it was tested with: Autistic children and their caregivers from public health services across all five regions of Brazil.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"To study effectiveness dyads will be randomised to receive PACT immediately or following a 6-month waitlist, stratified by healthcare service. Effectiveness outcomes (parent-child interaction, child adaptive social communication skills, caregiver well-being) will be collected pre- and post-PACT/waitlist and compared between groups." This is a randomised controlled trial design with a waitlist control group, meeting the definition of experimental design.
This is a protocol paper with no results yet. The effectiveness and implementation outcomes have not been measured, and whether PACT works in this real-world Brazilian public health context remains unknown.
