The problem
Intervention: Iron supplementation
Who it was tested with: School-age children in randomized trials included in a 2023 meta-analysis cited by the review.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"a 2023 meta-analysis of 13 randomized-trial reports" shows the child supplementation finding rests on randomized trials, but it is cited within a narrative review, and benefits differed by outcome, so the result is mixed.
The evidence is reported second-hand with no effect sizes given. The review does not separate laboratory-confirmed iron-deficiency anemia from iron deficiency without anemia in every study. Long-term effects are not established.
