The problem
Intervention: Timely hepatitis B birth dose vaccination (HepB-BD), alone or with hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIg), compared with no immunoprophylaxis at birth
Who it was tested with: 387 children born to HBV-positive, HIV-negative mothers in Ethiopia who had completed routine HepB3 vaccination, tested at a median age of 10 months.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"multi-centre cross-sectional observational study" - this is an observational comparison at a single point in time without randomisation or follow-up, so under the rule to choose the lower tier when the design is unclear it is placed below EXPERIMENTAL.
Not randomised, and the design is not a clear before-after or quasi-experimental one. Exposure groups may differ in other ways. The birth-dose-alone group was small with a wide confidence interval. Results apply to HIV-negative mothers only.
