The problem
Intervention: Parenting for Lifelong Health for Teens, a 14-session parenting program delivered by community members, including modules on family budgeting, savings, and modules addressing parenting practices, caregiver mental health, and substance use
Who it was tested with: 552 family dyads (adolescents aged 10-18 and primary caregivers) in rural South Africa.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A cluster randomized trial showed main effects on parenting and other secondary outcomes. We conducted secondary analysis of trial data to investigate five potential mediators of reduced violence against children... Structural equation modelling was used to test simultaneous hypothesized pathways to violence reduction." This design uses randomization with comparison groups and structural equation modelling to identify causal mechanisms, meeting the threshold for experimental evidence.
Follow-up period of 9-13 months may be too short to detect longer-term effects. Single-country implementation limits generalizability to other low and middle-income contexts.
