The problem
Intervention: Eight acupuncture sessions delivered over 10 weeks, with concurrent continuation of polyethylene glycol medication
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6-18 years with functional constipation.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Prospective, non-randomised, open-label pilot study in children with FC (6-18 years). Participants will undergo eight acupuncture sessions over 10 weeks." This is a before-and-after design measuring the same children before and after the intervention without a comparison group, but no results are yet available to assess efficacy.
This is a protocol paper reporting planned methods only, with no outcome data. The non-randomised, open-label design cannot determine causation or exclude placebo effects. As a pilot study, sample size will be small and results may not generalise.
