The problem
Intervention: Bright Bodies family-based intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment program
Who it was tested with: 391 youth (mean age 11.7 years, 60.1% female) with BMI ≥85th percentile, first-time participants 2008-2018.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Using multivariable mixed effect linear regression, we assessed monthly change in BMI percent of the 95th percentile (%BMIp95) and extended BMI z score by COI and COI-HE." The study measured the same participants before and after treatment stratified by neighborhood characteristics but lacked a control group, making it a pre-post design with subgroup analysis rather than experimental.
Observational study design without randomization; cannot determine causal mechanisms; self-selection into treatment program; baseline neighborhood assignment only, no follow-up on neighborhood moves.
