The problem
Intervention: Daily fermented oyster extract supplementation taken once daily before sleeping
Who it was tested with: 100 children aged 6-11 years with short stature (below 25th percentile).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"In total, 100 children (6–11 years old) were randomly divided into two (FO or control) groups. For 24 weeks, the subjects in the FO group took the FO extract once daily before sleeping, whereas the control group took placebo extracts, simultaneously." This is a randomized controlled design with concurrent measurement of outcome variables in both groups over the intervention period.
Study duration is limited to 24 weeks; no reporting of sustained effects after intervention cessation; clinical significance of height gains not discussed; no adverse event reporting; mechanism of action inferred rather than definitively established.
