The problem
Intervention: Girls' Holistic Development program that increases recognition and empowerment of elder community women, reinforces intergenerational communication and decision-making, and builds on West African collectivist cultural values to shift social norms supporting girls' health and education
Who it was tested with: Adolescent girls (very young adolescents), caregivers, and elder women (grandmothers) in rural Vélingara, Senegal.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We assessed the Girls Holistic Development approach using Realist Evaluation with a mixed-method, quasi-experimental design with a comparison population." The study compares intervention and comparison villages over 18 months, measuring changes in norms and intergenerational dynamics, which provides evidence stronger than pre-post designs due to the comparison group.
The study does not report baseline statistics or effect sizes; actual behavioral outcomes (marriage rates, pregnancy rates, school completion) are not measured, only normative shifts; sustainability beyond 18 months is unknown; results may be specific to the collectivist cultural context of rural Senegal.
