The problem
Intervention: Higher energy support (increased caloric intake) to promote catch-up growth in SGA infants
Who it was tested with: 340 singleton and twin children, including appropriately-sized (AGA) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Higher energy support did not improve CUG outcome." The prospective cohort design tracked nutritional intake and growth outcomes over time, but without random assignment to energy levels, cannot definitively prove that increased calories caused the lack of improvement in catch-up growth.
The study lacks a randomized control group comparison to isolate the effect of energy support; causality cannot be established from cohort data alone. Specific definitions and implementation of 'higher energy support' are not detailed.
