The problem
Intervention: The Fifth Child Project: a data-informed community engagement strategy comprising (1) mhealth tool for health facility staff and defaulter tracing forms for community health workers to improve data accuracy, (2) training of health workers in interpersonal skills, and (3) involvement of community lea
Who it was tested with: Children aged 9-23 months in northern Uganda (916 households with 935 children in intervention clusters; 881 households with 897 children in control clusters).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"To test the impact of this intervention and examine its underlying hypothesis that a data-informed community engagement strategy will increase immunisation coverage, we conducted a cluster-randomised controlled trial with an embedded process evaluation." The study uses randomisation with comparison groups (experimental design), but this document only reports baseline findings before the intervention outcomes were measured, making the evidence tier EXPERIMENTAL but the outcome direction INCONCLUSIVE.
This publication presents only baseline data and methodology. The endline survey and process evaluation results needed to assess the actual impact of the intervention were not yet available at the time of publication (pending March 2018). Therefore, no conclusions can be drawn about intervention effectiveness.
