The problem
Intervention: Protein-restricted natural diets with vitamin and mineral-fortified medical nutrition formulas
Who it was tested with: 20 children with inborn errors of metabolism (organic acidemia, urea cycle disorders, phenylketonuria) aged and gender not specified; compared with 20 healthy children.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"The study included 20 patients (5 organic acidemia, 5 urea cycle disorders, 10 phenylketonuria) and 20 healthy children. Patients followed a natural protein-restricted diet, while the healthy control group maintained their usual dietary habits. Dietary records were collected for both groups, and the DII and macro-micronutrient intakes were calculated." The design compares two groups on dietary inflammatory properties and nutritional outcomes, showing that protein-restricted diets with fortified formulas maintain comparable growth and do not increase inflammatory burden in affected children.
Small sample size (20 per group) and cross-sectional design with no control for confounding factors. No longitudinal assessment of outcomes or long-term health effects.
