The problem
Intervention: Strengthening children's psychological connection to nature through nature-based interventions
Who it was tested with: Children ages 8-10 (n=138) from three elementary schools serving majority economically disadvantaged Latino households in Austin, Texas.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Output from ordinary least squares regression models in which nature connection was measured using the Connection to Nature Index and that adjusted for gender, race, ethnicity, grade, and school found children's connection to nature was directly associated with higher overall SEL skills." The study uses regression analysis to assess associations between nature connection and SEL outcomes, but the cross-sectional design means it can only demonstrate correlation, not causation.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causality. Cannot determine if nature connection leads to better SEL or vice versa. Limited to one geographic region and specific demographic groups. Relies on school district survey data for SEL outcomes.
