The problem
Intervention: Timed and targeted care for family (ttCF) strategies delivered through 12 scheduled home visits by trained Barangay health workers from pregnancy through child's second year
Who it was tested with: 1518 pregnant women or mothers with children under 12 months across 12 municipalities in Eastern Visayas, Philippines (658 in intervention, 655 in comparison at 12-month follow-up).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We designed a quasi-experimental study encompassing 12 municipalities (six intervention and six comparison) and enrolling 1518 pregnant women or mothers with children <12 months. Trained Barangay health workers (BHWs) conducted 12 scheduled home visits from pregnancy through child's second year in the intervention areas, while comparison areas received routine health services." This is a quasi-experimental comparison of scheduled home visits versus routine services, using multilevel models to account for clustering.
The study design compares areas rather than randomising individuals, which may limit causal inference. The intervention improved service delivery and maternal mental health but did not translate into dietary or nutritional improvements, suggesting dietary outcomes may require additional complementary interventions beyond counselling.
