The problem
Intervention: Antenatal care services and health promotion regarding iron supplementation
Who it was tested with: 2,577 women aged 15-49 years in Somaliland who had a live birth in the 5 years before the 2020 survey.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A multilevel binary logistic regression model was used to identify determinants of iron supplement uptake while accounting for the hierarchical data structure." The study identifies factors associated with supplement use but does not test an intervention or measure outcomes in comparison groups, making it observational research that documents prevalence and predictors rather than intervention effectiveness.
Cross-sectional design cannot determine causation. Self-reported supplement use subject to recall and social desirability bias. The study identifies associations but does not evaluate the effectiveness of specific interventions to improve uptake.
