The problem
Intervention: Natural exposure to threat and deprivation adversity (observational study of existing conditions, not an intervention)
Who it was tested with: 902 adolescents (51.5% girls) from the UEVO study, assessed at ages 12-14 years and 15-16 years.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Participants were 902 adolescents (51.5% girls) from the UEVO study, assessed at ages 12-14 years at Time 1 (T1) and 15-16 years at Time 2 (T2). Affective inhibitory control was measured using an online emotional go/no-go task." This is a longitudinal study with prospective measurement of emotion regulation at two timepoints in a large population sample, meeting criteria for the experimental tier due to its longitudinal design tracking developmental change over time.
The study does not establish causal mechanisms linking threat and deprivation to changes in emotion regulation. The go/no-go task measures only one aspect of emotional control and findings may not generalise to other emotion regulation processes. The UEVO sample characteristics are not fully described, limiting generalisability.
