The problem
Intervention: Prospective assessment and monitoring of health-related quality of life and social determinants of health (using PedsQL™, Area Deprivation Index, and Child Opportunity Index) in children with central nervous system tumours
Who it was tested with: Children ages 0-21 years diagnosed with brain or spinal cord tumours in Indiana, evaluated in neuro-oncology clinic (n=107 patients).
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We implemented the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL™) for patients (ages 0-21 years) diagnosed with a CNS tumor evaluated in the neuro-oncology clinic from July 2019-January 2022... Simple linear regressions demonstrated a correlation between increasing disparity and decreasing quality of life across all dimensions." This represents a cross-sectional observational study establishing baseline data and associations, not testing an intervention outcome.
This is a baseline assessment only with no comparison group or longitudinal data; it demonstrates association, not causation, and cannot evaluate the effectiveness of any intervention to improve outcomes. Single-state sample limits generalisability.
