The problem
Intervention: A 2014 reform of the Federal Civil Code that set the minimum legal marriage age at 18 with no exceptions
Who it was tested with: Girls and women exposed and not exposed to the 2014 reform, analysed by municipality in Mexico, with municipalities grouped by prior prevalence of child marriage.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The empirical strategy relies on a difference-in-differences design" — the study compares exposed and unexposed cohorts across municipalities with differing prior prevalence, which is a quasi-experimental comparison-group design.
The abstract gives no effect sizes. The study is quasi-experimental and not randomised. Hospital discharge data is an indirect measure of violence, and the rise in violence cannot be clearly interpreted.
