The problem
Intervention: Conditional cash transfer programmes that provide cash assistance to vulnerable families conditional on meeting pre-defined health requirements
Who it was tested with: Vulnerable children and families in sub-Saharan Africa.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We conducted a systematic review aimed at summarising the available information on the impact of conditional cash transfers on health service utilisation and child health in sub-Saharan Africa." The review used multiple databases and study designs to assess a defined intervention against specific health outcomes, constituting an experimental evidence tier, though results were inconclusive due to insufficient and mixed evidence.
Only nine studies met eligibility criteria. No included studies evaluated childhood mortality. Heterogeneity in study designs and outcome measurements limited ability to draw strong conclusions.
