The problem
Intervention: Administration of seasonal influenza vaccine to children
Who it was tested with: Children vaccinated during 2013/2014 to 2019/2020 influenza seasons in Canada, with unvaccinated children as comparison group.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Data were collected using an online survey after a 7-day period for vaccinated and unvaccinated participants. Descriptive and inferential analyses explored the association between the influenza vaccine and health events." The study used a comparison group of unvaccinated children and statistical regression analysis to assess safety differences, meeting criteria for an experimental design despite its cross-sectional nature.
Cross-sectional design without longitudinal follow-up; reliance on self-reported online survey data subject to recall bias; 7-day assessment period may not capture delayed adverse events; data collection before COVID-19 pandemic limits current relevance.
